Startling Starters
While doing a starter, one young man was confused about the meaning of the word “lavish.”
“Isn’t that what you put on hot dogs?” he asked.
A few days later, we were doing an exercise on homonyms during the starter. Students were to think of homonyms of a few selected words; one word was “packed.” Everyone got the right answer, but they were confused when I asked them if they knew what it meant?
“Yeah, it means pact. The Palmetto Achievement something Test!”
